The Other Night School: B-girls and Bombshells: The Other 1950s Women

  • Hawthorne Room, Inn at Serenbe 10950 Hutchesons Ferry Road Palmetto, GA, 30268 United States (map)

Dr. Stephanie Chalifoux, Assistant Professor of History, University of West Georgia

The iconic 1950s images of women baking, vacuuming in pearls, and staying home to raise children form a persistent, if incomplete, depiction of the era. Alongside the growth of the suburbs and the nuclear family developed a vibrant commercial sex market that included prostitution and Playboy. Join us as we cast off the nostalgic lens and explore the world of the other 1950s women.

The Other Night School is a lecture series in partnership with Hills & Hamlets Bookshop, the University of West Georgia College of the Arts and HumanitiesUWG School of the Arts, and AIR Serenbe. University professors give talks on topics of interest—historical, intriguing, and curious—in a setting relaxed and dynamic. Following the lecture is a conversation with the speaker, a question-and-answer discussion paired with wine and cheese.

AIR Serenbe, the non-profit artist residency program of the Serenbe Institute, invests in artists of all disciplines.  We provide the time and space necessary for the creation of new work, as well as focused public programming that brings audiences in close contact with creative processes and practices.
