Join us and 2017 Shy Jones Focus Fellowship recipient, Bright Son, for an evening of music and poetry. Shy Jones is awarded to a lyricist who is making work for and about children and childhood.
Emcee, poet, singer, and guitarist Bright Son grew up with a jazz musician for a father and an artistic art study for a mother in Omaha, NE. Raised on jazz it led him to hip hop culture. Being introduced to rap through his older sibling, he started listening to artists such as Master P, Biggie Smalls, Nas and Tupac Shakur. He began freestyling at the age of 14 in rap battles for fun, and his interest in the culture grew.
Throughout his formative years, he took creative writing classes and became immersed in the open mic poetry scene. The effects of these inspirations can still be seen in his passionate and imaginative style. Known for his energetic presence, it's not surprising he started a break dancing crew while still in high school—the first of its kind in Ohama. By the age of 24, he decided to move to Atlanta to join the burgeoning music scene. A short while later he was introduced to Soul Food Cypher, where he was welcomed with open arms and encouraged to grow as an artist and individual. SFC has become a home away from home for this brilliant artist. A home so comfortable that he many times brings his 4-year-old son, Elijah, to come and enjoy the experience.
SOUL FOOD CYPHER
Soul Food Cypher utilizes the power of speech to transform the lives of individuals and their communities. We are an organization that showcases the positive aspects of rap through our cypher events, membership program, and community outreach. Our aim is to provide Atlanta’s lyricist (rappers) community with a safe and nurturing environment where their voice and artistry can grow. In addition, we look to solidify the art of freestyling as a genuine aesthetic to the wider artistic community and carry this rich tradition to the next generation.
NURTURING CRITICAL MOMENTS OF IMAGINATION
AIR Serenbe, the non-profit artist residency program of the Serenbe Institute, invests in artists of all disciplines. We provide the time and space necessary for the creation of new work, as well as focused public programming that brings audiences in close contact with creative processes and practices.
